A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, wherein fashion designers, brands or “houses” display their latest collections in runway fashion shows to buyers and the media. These events influence trends for the current and upcoming seasons. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the fashion capitals of the world: New York, London, Milan, and Paris (the “Big Four”) which receive the majority of press coverage being.
The concept of fashion week (Semaine des défilés (fr)) began in Paris, when marketers would hire women to wear couture items in public places, from racetracks to salons. These parades (parade is “défilé in French) gradually began to become social events of their own. (Indeed, in France, runway shows are still called “défilés de mode” — literally “fashion parades.”)
Timings: Milan Fashion Week (Italian: Settimana della moda) is held semi-annually in Milan, Italy. The autumn/winter event is held in February/March of each year, and the spring/summer event is held in September/October of each year. Paris Fashion Week (French: Semaine de la mode de Paris) is held biannually in Paris, France with spring/summer and autumn/winter events held each year in January and September / October . London Fashion Week (LFW) takes place in London twice a year, in February and September. New York Fashion Week (NYFW), held in February and September of each year, is a semi-annual series of events (generally lasting 7–9 days).
Fun Trivia on Milan Fashion Week is partially organized by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (The National Chamber for Italian Fashion), a non-profit association which disciplines, co-ordinates and promotes the development of Italian fashion and is responsible for hosting the fashion events and shows of Milan. The Camera Sindacale della Moda Italiana, was set up on 11 June 1958. This was the forerunner of the body which subsequently became the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.
